Use of Magnesite
China's magnesite is rich in resources, widely distributed, high in quality and large in reserves. The crystalline magnesite is mainly located in the Dashiqiao-Haicheng area of Yingkou, Liaoning Province, and its reserves account for 80% of the country.
Magnesite is mainly used for sintering magnesia, capacitor magnesia and the main raw materials for the production of alkaline refractories.
In the metallurgical industry, magnesite is mainly used as refractory material. Magnesite in building materials industry is used to manufacture magnesium-containing cement and other heat-resistant, heat-insulating and sound-insulating building materials. In the chemical industry, magnesite is used to produce magnesium sulfate and other magnesium-containing compounds. In the rubber industry, it is used as a filler, and magnesite is also a raw material for refining magnesium metal. Different applications have different requirements for ore quality. The Ministry of Metallurgical Industry issued the YB321-81 standard (Table 4.2.1) on May 1, 1982, which regulates the quality of magnesite used for refractory materials, sintering fluxes, etc.
Magnesia ore used as refractory material is calcined into heavy burnt magnesium. During the calcination process, impurities in magnesite, such as SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, etc., can form various crystalline and vitreous minerals with magnesia. In addition, CaO is in a free state during calcination, and easily absorbs water to form Ca(OH)2 or other compounds, thereby affecting the refractoriness, sintering property, load softening temperature, compressive strength, etc. of the refractory product, and thus is used as a refractory material. Light burned magnesite and magnesium chloride or magnesium sulfate solution can be combined with magnesium-containing cement. This cement has good cohesiveness and plasticity, short solidification time, strong binding ability with organic matter, hardening after hardening, etc. The material has good properties such as heat insulation, sound insulation and wear resistance. Light burnt magnesium is added to sawdust, wood silk, sand and the like to make decorative materials such as particle board and artificial grindstone. Light burnt magnesium and asbestos can be mixed into insulating and soundproofing materials for use in buildings, boilers and steam pipes. For magnesite containing magnesium cement, the quality requirements are not too high, mainly CaO and Fe2O3 should not be too high, because the former is in a free state during calcination, which causes the cement to expand, and the latter causes the cement color to deteriorate.
Magnesite can also be used as a raw material for refining magnesium metal, which generally requires a high MgO content and a low impurity content. The magnesite used in the rubber industry should be highly dispersible and free of manganese.
